Guest Q&A: Rob Salkowitz

Rob SalkowitzRob Salkowitz is co-founder and principal consultant for the Seattle-based communications firm MediaPlant LLC.  In addition to teaching in the Digital Media program at the University of Washington, Seattle, he is the author of three books, Young World Rising, Generation Blend, and the recently released Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture. Salkowitz will talk about the big issues facing creative industries today, including transmedia convergence, digital distribution and new audience and markets, in a panel at 3 p.m. during this year’s festival.

1. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I’ll know it when I get there.

2.  What is your greatest fear?
Cthulhu awakens and doesn’t like his coffee.

3. On what occasion do you lie?
Mostly on questionnaires.

4.   If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’d be neater. It wouldn’t make me any happier, but it would definitely make my home life more tranquil.

5. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Haven’t done it yet.

6. What do you most dislike about yourself?
The fact that I need sleep. I hate missing out on stuff.

7. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Cthulhu r’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!

8. What is your most treasured possession?
Good health.

9. What do you most value in your friends?
Patience and sense of humor.

11. What supernatural gift would you most like to possess?
Time travel would be cool.

12.  What is your favorite food?
Donuts, but I never allow myself to eat them. The minute I get a terminal diagnosis or hear that an asteroid is hitting the earth, my first stop will be Top Pot Donuts here in Seattle.

13. What is your favorite color?
Black, which, come to think of it, is a lack of color.

14. Who is your favorite fictional character?
Will Eisner’s The Spirit.

15. Who is your favorite person in history?
Benjamin Franklin

16. Who is your favorite artist?
Picasso. My favorite living comic artist is Charles Burns.

17. Who is your favorite musician?
Tom Waits

18. Who are your favorite writers?
William Gibson, Neal Stephenson and Ishmael Reed. My favorite comics writer is Alan Moore.

19. Who are your heroes in real life?
Anyone who calls bullshit on misuse of power.

20. DC, Marvel, Lovecraft or Whedon Universe?
Cthulhu r’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!
