Guest Q&A: Dan Parsons

Dan ParsonsDan Parsons started out in comics in the late 1990s working part-time writing and illustrating his creator-owned series Savage Planet and Harpy while employed as a research scientist at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. In 2002, he began working steadily for Dark Horse Comics, penciling and primarily inking titles such as Star Wars: Republic, King Kong and Star Wars: Jedi. More recently, Parsons has been part of the creative team that introduced the acclaimed Star Wars: Legacy series and has been a regular inker on Knights of the Old Republic, Clone Wars and other Star Wars titles.

He is currently inking the new Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi series for Dark Horse, illustrating a new Sherlock Holmes graphic novel called Brothers of Baker Street, and recently completed drawings for HBO’s Game of Thrones. Catch Dan’s 11 a.m. presentation, “The Anatomy of a Comic Book.”

1. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

No such thing as perfect, so I know this is a trick questionnaire or something.

2. What is your greatest fear?

Apparently, losing my cell phone or guitar pick, as I have a lot of nightmares about those things.

3. On what occasion do you lie?

I lie to myself whenever I can, apparently

4. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

That I wouldn’t lie to myself as much as I do.

5.  What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Holding myself back from putting a contract out on my ex-wife.

6. What do you most dislike about yourself?

My eyes are too close together.

7. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Kiss my ass. Houston, we have a problem. Sorry, I didn’t mean it.

8. What is your most treasured possession?

My Ray Harryhausen Cyclops statue from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

9. What do you most value in your friends?

Integrity, I guess.

Breathe underwater.

Blackened salmon

The Wicked Witch from Snow White – she’s always right.  “Love always ends in betrayal.”

18. Who are your favorite writers?

Mary Shelley. Jules Verne. Doug Moench.

19. Who are your heroes in real life?

M.H. Ghandi, Chief Pontiac, Napoleon Bonaparte.

20. DC, Marvel, Lovecraft or Whedon Universe?

Grew up on Marvel, a little DC. I like Boom!’s Planet of the Apes these days. Whedon is pretty cool for decaf.

21. What is your present state of mind?

Confusion-State of Confusion.
